Omar Mandela: The Entrepreneur Behind Café Javas, City Oil and Mandela Millers
Omar Ahmed Mandela, popularly known as Hajji Mandela, is one of Uganda’s prominent entrepreneurs and the founder of the Mandela Group of Companies, a business empire with interests spanning hospitality, fuel, automotive services, food processing and consumer products.
His business journey is closely associated with the growth of brands that have become familiar to Ugandan consumers, including Café Javas, City Oil and Mandela Millers.
From Auto Spares to a Business Empire
Mandela’s entrepreneurial journey began with the establishment of Mandela Auto Spares, a business that laid the foundation for the wider Mandela Group.
Rather than focusing on personal consumption of his early business earnings, Mandela has been described as prioritising reinvestment and expansion. His approach helped the business grow from an automotive venture into a diversified group of companies.
The group later expanded into fuel retail through City Oil, followed by other businesses in tyres, automotive services, consumer goods and hospitality.
The Rise of Café Javas
One of Mandela’s most recognisable ventures is Café Javas, which emerged from a small refreshment outlet at a City Oil station on Bombo Road.
The original concept was developed to serve customers waiting for vehicle services and gradually evolved into a full restaurant. Café Javas was formally launched as a restaurant in the mid-2000s and subsequently expanded into a major restaurant chain.
The brand later expanded beyond Uganda into Kenya. Following a trademark dispute involving the name Café Javas, the Kenyan outlets were rebranded as CJs.
The restaurant business became one of the most visible parts of the Mandela Group, establishing Mandela as a major player in Uganda’s hospitality industry.
Entering Food Processing
In 2016, the Mandela Group expanded into food processing through Mandela Millers, entering the wholesale grain-milling business.
The company produces flour and cereal products, with its operations built around processing staple food commodities and serving the wider food market. The Mandela Group describes Mandela Millers as part of its expansion into the food sector.
The move into manufacturing represented a significant shift from Mandela’s earlier businesses, giving the group a presence not only in services and retail but also in production.
A Diversified Business Group
Today, the Mandela Group’s interests extend across several sectors. Its businesses include Café Javas, Mandela Millers, City Oil, City Tyres, Mandela Auto Spares, City Lubes and On-The-Go, among others.
The group’s growth illustrates Mandela’s strategy of building businesses across different parts of the economy while reinvesting in new ventures.
His story has consequently become an example of Ugandan entrepreneurship, particularly the transition from a single business into a diversified group operating across multiple industries.
Building Businesses Around Everyday Needs
A common thread running through Mandela’s businesses is their focus on everyday consumer needs from fuel and vehicle services to restaurants and staple foods.
Café Javas serves the hospitality market, City Oil operates in fuel and related services, while Mandela Millers participates in food production. This diversification has allowed the group to establish a presence across several important areas of Uganda’s economy.
For Mandela, the growth of these businesses has also created employment and expanded opportunities for local suppliers and service providers.
From an auto-spares business to a diversified corporate group, Omar Mandela’s entrepreneurial journey demonstrates how long-term reinvestment and expansion can transform a single enterprise into a collection of businesses serving millions of consumers.
