Internship Overview
The Country Finance Intern will gain practical experience in financial management within an international non-governmental organization.
The placement provides hands-on exposure to cash management, payment processing, financial documentation, accounting systems, grant financial monitoring, invoice processing, and financial reporting.
The intern will work under the guidance and supervision of the Country Finance Officer while supporting the Finance team in ensuring accountable and efficient use of SNV resources.
Key Learning & Responsibilities
1. Cash Management & Bank Reconciliation
- Learn to maintain and reconcile daily cashbooks.
- Understand how bank accounts are monitored and managed to prevent overdrafts.
- Support month-end cash counts.
- Participate in surprise cash counts.
2. Expenditure Review & Coding
- Review expenditure requests and receipts for accuracy, completeness, and appropriate coding.
- Learn how to prepare compliant payment vouchers.
- Gain an understanding of expense-report audit and approval processes.
3. Financial Documentation & Filing
- Learn best practices for filing and archiving vouchers and supporting documents chronologically.
- Retrieve accounting records for:
- Management
- Auditors
- Third parties
- Maintain accurate and accessible financial documentation.
4. Accounting Systems — SAP
- Gain practical experience posting transactions in SAP.
- Support timely project invoice entries.
- Develop an understanding of the monthly accounting cycle.
5. Grant Financial Monitoring
- Assist in reviewing grantee financial reports.
- Learn donor financial compliance requirements.
- Support monthly tracking of implemented activities.
- Verify receipt and posting of related invoices.
6. Financial Reporting Support
- Assist in compiling information for project-level financial reports.
- Perform basic accuracy checks and variance analysis.
- Learn processes for clearing:
- Open-item accounts
- Accruals
- Payments
7. Invoice Processing
- Learn how invoices are linked to the Procure-to-Pay (P2P) process.
- Support submission of invoices for approval.
- Follow up on invoice approvals and processing.
Qualifications
Applicants should have:
- A degree in:
- Accounting
- Finance
- Business Studies
- A related field
- Previous exposure to finance or accounting through:
- Coursework
- Internship
- Volunteer experience
- Previous experience with international NGOs (INGOs) is an advantage.
- Familiarity with accounting software and fundamental accounting concepts.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to different working environments.
- Willingness to travel occasionally.
- Good computer literacy.
- Strong documentation and record-keeping skills.
Internship Terms
This is a 6-month learning placement designed to provide practical experience and build professional capacity.
The internship does not constitute employment. However, the successful intern will receive practical exposure to international NGO financial-management processes and systems, together with mentoring and supervision from the Country Finance Officer.
