The Government of Uganda has renewed its call for all public agencies to transition to the Electronic Government Procurement (e-GP) platform as part of efforts to improve efficiency, transparency and accountability in public procurement.
The move comes as accounting officers undergo training to equip them with the knowledge and skills needed to spearhead the implementation of the digital procurement system across government institutions.
Speaking during the training, Acting Accountant General Godfrey Ssemugoona said the e-GP platform is expected to eliminate many of the challenges associated with manual procurement processes, including document tampering, excessive paperwork and lengthy approval procedures.
According to Ssemugoona, the adoption of the electronic system will significantly streamline procurement operations, reducing processing timelines by as much as 50 percent. He noted that faster procurement will enable government agencies to deliver projects and services more efficiently while enhancing value for public resources.
The e-GP platform is also expected to strengthen transparency by providing a secure digital trail for procurement activities, making it easier to monitor transactions and minimize opportunities for fraud and manipulation.
Government officials believe the nationwide rollout of the system will modernize public procurement, improve service delivery and promote greater accountability across ministries, departments and agencies.
The training of accounting officers forms part of the government’s broader strategy to ensure a smooth transition to the digital platform and accelerate the adoption of technology in public financial management.
