Six staff members of the Uganda Railways Corporation (URC) have been arrested over alleged fraud involving UGX20.6 billion allocated for capacity-building activities.

The arrests follow investigations into the management and utilization of funds intended to support capacity building at the state-owned railway corporation.

The suspects are being questioned as authorities seek to establish how the funds were handled and whether procurement and financial management procedures were followed.

Investigations Underway

The investigation is expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the allocation, approval and expenditure of the UGX20.6 billion, including the roles played by individual officials.

Authorities are also expected to scrutinize supporting documentation and financial transactions associated with the capacity-building programme.

The arrests represent part of ongoing efforts by government authorities to strengthen accountability in the management of public resources and crack down on suspected financial misconduct in public institutions.

URC Under Scrutiny

Uganda Railways Corporation plays a central role in the country’s plans to expand and modernize rail transport as part of efforts to improve freight movement and reduce pressure on road infrastructure.

The corporation has been undertaking various initiatives aimed at improving its operational capacity and strengthening railway services.
