The U.S. Embassy Kampala is seeking eligible and qualified applicants for the position of Electrical Engineering Supervisor in the Facilities Office. This is a permanent, full-time position responsible for supervising the maintenance of the New Embassy Compound’s electrical systems and leading a team of skilled technical personnel.

Job Purpose

The Electrical Engineering Supervisor is responsible for leading a team of skilled tradespersons and ensuring the maintenance, operation, and reliability of all electrical power distribution systems at the New Embassy Compound (NEC). The role oversees generators, transformers, switchgear, UPS systems, electrical distribution networks, and related infrastructure while ensuring compliance with engineering standards and safety requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise maintenance of all NEC electrical power distribution systems.
  • Lead and manage a team of electrical technicians and tradespersons.
  • Maintain generators, transformers, voltage regulators, switchgear, UPS systems, and electrical distribution equipment.
  • Develop scopes of work, technical specifications, and cost estimates for electrical projects.
  • Prepare engineering drawings and construction documentation using AutoCAD.
  • Diagnose electrical faults and coordinate corrective maintenance.
  • Ensure compliance with electrical engineering standards, safety procedures, and lock-out/tag-out requirements.
  • Monitor preventive maintenance programs using CMMS.
  • Prepare technical reports and provide engineering briefings to management.
  • Coordinate with contractors and suppliers on electrical works.
  • Ensure maintenance activities comply with quality and safety standards.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of Secondary Education.
  • Bachelor’s Degree (4 years) in Electrical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline from an accredited institution.
  • Engineering curriculum equivalent to ABET or recognized engineering accreditation standards.

Experience Required

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a Project Engineer or Engineer in a manufacturing plant, hospital, university, office complex, resort, or similar large facility.
  • Experience managing preventive maintenance programmes using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Demonstrated experience preparing engineering designs, construction documents, scopes of work, and cost estimates.
  • At least 1 year supervising five (5) or more employees.

Knowledge, Skills and Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of electrical engineering principles and electrical distribution systems.
  • Knowledge of generators, transformers, switchgear, motor control centres, UPS systems, and electrical protection equipment.
  • Knowledge of electrical codes, engineering calculations, and construction practices.
  • Ability to diagnose electrical faults and recommend appropriate solutions.
  • Ability to prepare AutoCAD drawings and engineering documentation.
  • Ability to interpret electrical schematics, drawings, and technical specifications.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, MS Project, and engineering management software.
  • Strong report writing and communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and supervisory skills.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining high integrity and confidentiality.
  • Ability to operate a manual transmission vehicle.
  • Ability to lift equipment weighing up to 25kg.

Language Requirement

  • Fluent in English (speaking, reading, and writing).
