Saudi Arabia has announced plans for the NEOM Sky Stadium, a futuristic venue suspended 350 meters above the desert floor within The Line, the linear city under construction in the NEOM megaproject. The $1 billion stadium is designed to host matches up to the quarterfinal stage of the 2034 FIFA World Cup.
Billed as the world’s first “sky stadium,” the project will seat 46,000 spectators and run entirely on renewable energy. It is expected to be completed by 2032, according to officials from NEOM. The design aims to merge cutting-edge architecture, sustainability, and fan experience, offering an unprecedented aerial view of live matches.
Reactions to the announcement have been mixed. Supporters see it as a bold step toward transforming global sports infrastructure, while critics on social media have raised concerns about the structural integrity and practicality of a stadium suspended hundreds of meters in the air.
The NEOM Sky Stadium will form part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, a national strategy focused on diversifying the economy and promoting innovation. Integrated into The Line’s mirrored megastructure, the venue will double as a multi-purpose arena for sports, concerts, and entertainment events year-round.
The project is being developed by NEOM in partnership with the Ministry of Sport and the Public Investment Fund (PIF), alongside international architectural firms specializing in sustainable, high-altitude design. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2026 and finish in 2032, ahead of the World Cup.
Beyond its ambitious engineering, the stadium underscores Saudi Arabia’s commitment to sustainable development. It will be built with eco-friendly materials and powered entirely by green energy sources, aligning with NEOM’s goal of creating carbon-neutral infrastructure.
